People's Forum on MDGs (PFM), Bangladesh

In an attempt to reflect on the progress of the state initiatives towards achieving the MDGs, a national consultation in November 2004, largely attended by representatives from civil society organizations, sectoral networks, some development partners, media and relevant Government agencies led to the formation of a civil society platform in Bangladesh known as the People's Forum on MDGs (PFM). Over the last few months it has developed into a broad based coalition of 176 organizations representing networks, umbrella bodies, professional groups, women’s movement, human rights organizations and NGOs

What is GCAP

The Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) is a worldwide alliance committed to making world leaders live up to their promises, and to making a breakthrough on poverty in 2005. It is an alliance between a range of actors around the common cause of ending poverty: existing coalitions, community groups, trade unions, individuals, religious and faith groups, campaigners and more.

PFM Bangladesh has expressed its solidarity with the Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) particularly focusing on aid, trade and debt, as these issues are known to be making an impact on the lives of millions of poor people in the world.

Our Mission

October 17th is your chance to Stand Up and Speak Out, for the 50,000 people who die from extreme poverty and the millions more who suffer from a lack of food, clean water, health care, education, peace and security.

We are calling on governments to take action NOW.
Between 9pm GMT Tuesday October 16 and 9pm GMT Wednesday October 17, we ask you to “Stand Up and Speak Out” against poverty and inequality. Join an existing event or start your own – but be a part of the growing movement of people who say NO to extreme poverty.

Various activities are being planned:

Guinness Record: 24 hours of mobilization around the world. Check out Stand Against Poverty website.

Poverty Requiem: An initiative for choirs and singers led by Oxfam Novib. Choirs in dozens of countries will perform this specially written song on October 17. Check out the Poverty Requiem website.

The Australian GCAP coalition and others will be producing banners which will come together on October 17 to create a highly visual image of the fight against poverty and inequality.
